France 2010 Capturing the moment in a photograph

France 2010: Capturing the moment in a photograph

In his paper on photography, Pierre Bourdieu looks for answers to the many questions which often arise when this artistic medium is discussed.
In particular, Bourdieu discusses what it is that motivates millions of people to take occasional photographs with billions of photos taken every hour around the world From professional and amateur photographers to artists and enthusiasts, people from all walks of life, when faced with the beauty of a place, a monument or a work of art, seek to capture the moment so that they can say ‘I was there’.
A photograph is a unique and personal testimony born out of individual social and anthropological aims. The memory of a place; waiting for the perfect light; a posed photo of family members; the kiss under the Eiffel Tower; the search for a unique photograph… it is in this way that each shot also becomes a ritual for recording our lives and the beauty which surrounds us, for love – lived and shared, and for self- understanding.
Such shots return from the past and are relived in the present every time we look at them, perhaps as a way of protecting ourselves from our fear for the future. However, ultimately, they are merely moments which bear exclusive witness to our existence, waiting to be captured forever.
